Rapp Marine boom in Chinese research vessels
Right at the end of 2016, Rapp Marine secured it’s largest single contract in China. This to China Ocean Mineral Resources Association (COMRA).

Rapp Marine is developing highly innovative solutions which support the customers’ needs. The company delivers complete deck machinery solutions to research and fishing vessels, workboats and offshore oil & gas vessels.
In the last three years Rapp Marine has secured 9 out of 11 orders for Chinese research vessels that were advertised on international tender in China.
- It is our largest single order in China. It confirms our strong position as a supplier to the research segment, says Jakob Nielsen, VP sales in Rapp Marine.
Back to our roots
Rapp Marine has supplied deck machinery to research vessels since it’s inception in the mid 70s. But the company were also, like many others, attracted by the boom times in the oil industry.
- We had some offshore deliveries and our products were in demand in that market, but we never stopped focusing on opportunities within the fishing and research vessel market. We are very happy and grateful for this today.
To enhance competitiveness, the company implemented some changes two years ago. As a result, the production moved to Serbia, but the headquarters are still in Bodo with its sales and marketing, service and engineering deparment.
- Now we have full pressure in the markets we have traditionally been involved in, focusing fully on fishing and research.
And the results came last autumn when Rapp Marine secured contracts for 7 new fishing vessels, for Danish, Irish and Russian trawlers.
High activity in the research vessel market
According to Nielsen the Chinese are currently building a lot of research vessels. These long term projects require a lot of work to reach the finish. But the company’s long experience with research vessles, combined with the boom worldwide, has resulted in new contracts and greater market share.
- We have more than 40 years of experience in this market. The advantage is also that many of the oldest vessels are now replacing equipment or are being replaced with new vessels.
In the last order, the company will deliver winches which are used to launch research equipment in the water and also towing of water metering equipment.
- There is also much to be done in Norway after the contracts are secured. The project management and engineering will be handled locally in Bodo.
Nielsen will soon be travelling bach to the Far East.
- There are several more contracts still to be awarded within the research vessel market. It's hectic but very enjoyable!
